The Bethlehem Sands casino, built on the site of the former Bethlehem Steel which was once a symbol of America’s industrial might, asked the state of Pennsylvania for more slot machines yesterday.
When the casino was proposed, the something for nothing schemers promised a massive hotel and retail complex but after the project received its approvals, they shelved those plans in 2008 because of “the economy” yet they still opened the casino itself.
Almost one year later, the hotel and retail complex are still on the shelf yet the casino is looking to expand its number of slot machines. The New York Times reported yesterday how predatory gambling revenues are down significantly across the country so why isn’t “the economy” preventing the Sands from expanding its gambling operation?
The state of Pennsylvania should reject Bethlehem Casino’s bid for new machines. Rosie the Riveter never relied on gimmicks and false hope. She symbolized hard work and the American resilience, qualities completely contrary to the practice of state-sponsored predatory gambling.
