New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote a MUST READ column on America’s critical loss of economic values. And the first culprit he targets on the list is state-sponsored predatory gambling.
Brooks writes: “Evidence of this shift in values is all around. Some of the signs are seemingly innocuous. States around the country began sponsoring lotteries: government-approved gambling that extracts its largest toll from the poor.”
He rightly concludes “the slide in economic morality afflicts Red and Blue America equally” which is why our movement to stop predatory gambling is the most diverse social movement in America. We are non-partisan and our movement is made up of people whose views span the political spectrum as well as nearly every faith community. It consists of concerned citizens from every region in America and from nearly every walk of life.
Our movement is an affirmation that Americans, despite all of our differences, share basic core principles and values regardless of whether we consider ourselves a part of the political Left or Right.
