The only party that benefits from the Lottery are the people who own and promote the Lottery

The New York Daily News reports this morning about Curtis Sharp, winner of a large NY lottery jackpot back in 1982. For a time, Sharp was the most famous lottery winner in America courtesy of the NY Lottery which used him in lottery commercials and as a central figure in its PR machine. He posed for photos with stars like Andy Warhol, Raquel Welch, Dick Gregory and Larry Hagman, and was squired around town in stretch limos.

Today, Sharp lives off his pension and Social Security checks in a small house in Antioch, Tenn. His story is a common one among lottery jackpot winners.

The Lottery is a government program that plays people for suckers promoted in the name of getting someone else to pay our taxes.  It violates America’s core democratic principle of equal citizenship and is a major cause of our country’s debt culture. One out of five people now think the best way to accumulate the capital they need to achieve financial security and live the American Dream is to play the Lottery.
