The New York Daily News reports the New York Giants football team has agreed to place the Connecticut Lottery’s logo on their practice jerseys as part of a contractual agreement that will also put the Giants logo on a $5 instant scratch ticket.
The NFL made a serious mistake by allowing its franchises to partner with the state-sponsored predatory gambling trade. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says there is big distinction between scratch-off games not based on the outcome of sports events, and gambling on the outcome of sports events.
There’s a reason the NFL and other sports teams doesn’t allow their members to gamble on games. It’s because the culture of gambling is corrupt and corrupting. Allowing state lotteries to use NFL team logos on predatory gambling products like scratch tickets may not violate the letter of NFL regulations, but it sure violates the spirit.
