He meant to say that state lotteries are like a “bank heist”

by spgadmin

In trying to make the case why lottery employees should receive such extravagant salaries, the embattled state lottery director in Arkansas compared his operations to a bank.

Lotteries could be compared to a bank that Bernie Madoff might run or a bank that makes its money through predatory lending practices.

The truth is any bank with a business model like our state lotteries – one based on keeping people in debt and selling expensive, highly addictive products to a very small number of out-of-control citizens - would be shut down and prosecuted by government authorities.

In an opinion piece in yesterday’s Cleveland Plain Dealer, Alex Roberts offers one example how government could act to help make families more financially secure in these economic times.

Why isn’t government in these economic times encouraging people to save money for a more secure future instead of spending tens of millions of dollars in advertising trying to convince them to buy virtually worthless gambling products?
