Below is the statement issued by Stop Predatory Gambling on today’s federal indictments in the Alabama gambling vote-buying scheme:
“Today’s indictments reflect America’s emerging “pay to prey” political culture. Casinos are the most predatory business in the nation and they have escaped scrutiny for so long because of their unparalled spending to influence our political process.
The massive expansion of predatory gambling over the last twenty years has come as the result of gambling interests spending hundreds of millions of dollars under the guise of “Let the People Vote.” What they really meant was “Let Us Buy the Vote!”
According to the Center for Responsive Politics at OpenSecrets.org, six out of ten of the top funders of political causes nationwide are casino interests. For more information about how much money gambling interests spend to, please visit and see their Influence and Lobbying section as well as their National Donor Profiles section.
We applaud the FBI, the Department of Justice, and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation for taking action against this “pay to prey” scheme.”
