The San Jose Mercury News reported this week that six of the top 10 largest donors to political causes nationwide were Indian casino tribes, spending a total of $160 million, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics study. The figure does not include the tens of millions of dollars spent by commercial gambling interests like Penn National and Harrahs. By comparison, the powerful Service Employees International Union spent $35 million and the National Association of Realtors dished out $28 million.
It says a lot about why our government is broken when the most predatory institution in America is also the biggest player in the nation’s politics. We used to refer to corrupt and inept governments as “banana republics.” Today, the more appropriate term is “casino republics” and America is sliding into becoming the world’s biggest.
Anyone who wants to bring real change to our government, regardless of where he or she stands on the political spectrum, needs to first take aim at the government program of predatory gambling.
