A common misperception among some public officials around the country is the idea that if government was not in the predatory gambling business, all of the extreme forms of gambling being promoted today would be available at the local bookie instead. By every measure, citizens are losing more money than ever before because of this government policy.
In her recent Philadelphia Inquirer column, Monica Yant Kinney nails the difference perfectly between the state’s predatory gambling operation and the local bookie: “Bookies don’t prey on gamblers. Bookies don’t solicit. Gamblers find them.”
Today, government spends hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising and marketing to find and lure citizens who were non-gamblers into losing their money.
Schools
All that money that our government is spending to entice people to waste away their paychecks could be going to our children’s schools or other programs that will help get the American economy moving again. Such a shame!
