The Oklahoma State Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday killed an amendment to abolish the state lottery while at the same time, the committee advanced the measure it was attached to banning the Oklahoma Lottery Commission from using children in advertisements.
“Even though it is a legal activity for adults, it is not legal for children to participate in the lottery,” said Rep. Harold Wright, R-Weatherford, the House sponsor. “To me, it is not good to have children promoting something that has proven to be addictive.”
Sen. Jim Wilson, D-Tahlequah, offered the amendment to abolish the lottery.
As more concerned citizens speak out against government’s partnership with predatory gambling interests all across the country, we will see the debate in Oklahoma spread to many other states.
yes
Kids should not be used in ads nor should images associated with children be used in ads. Here in Oregon the lottery ran an aggressive campaign for the holidays that featured Santa Claus. It was one of the most outrageous marketing campaigns I’ve ever seen.
I've seen those Oregon ads
We have a picture of the Santa billboard on our website. Go to the Media section, scroll to Photos and then the picture is on the second row, far right. It’s a 2011 version of Joe Camel.
