Up and down the East Coast today, government leaders are declaring a state of emergency and ordering residents to evacuate shoreline areas in advance of Hurricane Irene. The storm is so menacing that it is forcing Atlantic City’s 11 casinos to close today for only the third time in history. Of course, the most predatory business in America did not do it willingly…. the Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management issued a mandatory evacuation order starting at 6 a.m. today. You can be confident if the casinos are damaged by the hurricane, they will likely lobby for even more taxpayer subsidies to cover their repair costs.
I hope Maine does the same thing!

Having lived in and worked in the AC area, I know what a blessing these closings are! For one day or however many days they are closed, gamblers might–just might–think of their families during a hurricane. However, I have observed way too many of them who are just plain angry that the casino is closed! Another good thing? The first responders will be able to do the jobs they need to do during the storm instead of taking care of casino-related crimes. To talk of lost revenue……….that’s a laugh. The only people who “lost” were the owners!
