One publicly-stated reason why government got into the predatory gambling business in the first place was “citizens are doing it anyway so we may as well capture that money.” The evidence is indisputable, however, that government has turned a nation of small earners who could be small savers into a nation of habitual bettors. New York State alone presently spends $90 million on advertising virtually worthless lottery games to its citizens.
But just in case anyone still had doubts about whether government was actually pushing people into even deeper debt by creating millions of new gamblers, along comes the Washington State Lottery which is so blatant about its efforts they have actually created an ad campaign and website titled “Learntolottery.com” I genuinely thought it was a spoof from one of those late night political news comedy shows when I first saw it but I was wrong. It’s a full-fledged government program.
After visiting the link above and watching the video below, how can any concerned citizen not conclude that the government’s predatory gambling program has failed?
The Georgia Lottery will probably not be far behind
It’s remarkable that lotteries get away with that kind of marketing. The GA Lottery is probably thinking of ways to do the same thing as I write this.
Lotteries are exempt from truth in advertising laws
They get away with because they are exempt from truth in advertising laws thanks to an act by Congress in 1974. Learn more about it here. http://stoppredatorygambling.org/category/research-center/lottery-advertising/
Sad
Our government is this country’s biggest gambling promoter. That’s a sad state of affairs.

Oh! I get it! We hear that kids are not learning in schools. Many of them are thus unemployable. Even the ones who do well because they DID learn can’t get jobs in this economy. Therefore, the Lottery Commission will “teach” them to “learn to lottery” for free. THEN, the government can get back from those people all the money they gave them in unemployment payments, food stamps, welfare, etc. Their website address says it all: “Learn to lottery.” It does not say “Learn to win,” which is not what the government wants anyone to do! Let me correct that. They want ENOUGH people to “win” that they can advertise those big winners WITHOUT divulging how many people had to lose in order for that “winner” to win! Makes perfect sense to me!!!!!
