Previously we have highlighted the push in Pennsylvania to require casinos to send monthly statements to gamblers about how much money they lost. This week, in an effort led by activist Bill Kearney and Rep. Paul Clymer, the bill passed the state House Gaming Oversight Committee by a 14-11 vote. All ten Democrats on the panel voted against the measure.
Those who voted in opposition must have been persuaded by the memorable testimony of Sands Bethlehem (PA) president Robert DeSalvio who said that sending monthly statements to gamblers about their losses will violate privacy and may encourage citizens to gamble more because it will remind them about their loss, potentially creating the urge to chase.
“I have a feeling,” he said, but “I can’t quite pinpoint the research.”
Kearney and Clymer have done a good job
I want to see Sands leave our community but until then, the work of Bill Kearney and Paul Clymer is important to spotlighting the business of casinos. They deserve our admiration and support.
