After watching the news report below from Good Morning America, how is it conceivable that anyone associated with the Seminole casino in Tampa did not know this woman was a gambling addict? It is impossible to believe that an individual could lose $250,000 in a day at the casino…$14 million over a period of time… inside the casino without the casino knowing full well this woman was a gambling addict.
The argument that “no one made her do it” does not hold water. By definition, someone who is an addict has no free will and the evidence is indisputable this woman was a gambling addict.
This is Nuts!
This is ridiculous, let alone the fact that it is patronizing to have shopping themed slots to lure in women, how can a moral society allow this sort of addictive self destructive behavior to be sanctioned and promoted by the government. Aren’t we our brother’s and sister’s keeper? I understand completely that we have been horrible in our country’s treatment of Native Americans, but giving them tools like casinos and slot parlors to better their living circumstances doesn’t seem to help anyone. Don’t most “Indian” casinos have very few members of the old tribe as beneficiaries? How about health care, school loan and grant programs and home financing assistance if we really wish to help better peoples living circumstances…not the deed to a slot parlor.
Jenn – casinos have a business model based on addiction and indebtedness. That is how they, both commercial and tribal, make their huge profits. They have devised all sorts of ways to attract different segments of the population (women, Asian Americans, etc.) to lose their money.
It was interesting that Good Morning America did not ask the casino owners the question: “Did you think this woman could afford to lose $14 million”
They DID know!!!
Nathaniel, she had WON over $13 million, as had the other woman $27,000. They both became addicted because they didn’t view money they won as really their money. A story I read about Jennifer even pointed out that, in their opinion, she really only lost $700,000.
It’s interesting that her father-in-law is still defending her after she stole all his money.
Predatory? Lethal is more like it!
The casino “folks” not only KNOW what they are doing. They plan very carefully to do it! They have the ability to track just about everything each patron does: how much they spend in both time and money, how much they win, etc. How else do you think they decide who to give “comps” to? They “comp” the high rollers and the frequent rollers. They can’t make money on the occasional patron who brings $20 to lose and sticks to that amount. It is said in Gamblers Anonymous literature that compulsive gambling leads to one of three places: the gates of insanity, death, or prison. Those are the people that casinos prey upon!
