Jim Rubens, the remarkable leader against predatory gambling in New Hampshire, recently shared that less than 36 hours before they will be called upon to vote this Wednesday, New Hampshire’s five Executive Councilors received a “Late Item” request to approve spending $290,000 taxpayer dollars on two contracts with gambling industry consultants. This money would be spent to design a regulatory structure for slot machines – a form of gambling that does not even exist in New Hampshire after being repeatedly rejected by the state’s legislature.
Why would the state divert $290,000 of public money to develop a structure to regulate something that does not even exist? This is beyond putting the cart before the horse. It is having the cart without a horse and the cart has square wheels.
