As further evidence about how government’s failed policy of predatory gambling is dramatically influencing America’s kids, the photo on the left was taken at Joe’s Playland Arcade in Hampton Beach, NH this past Saturday, September 10th. Why is an arcade geared to children offering slot machines? Compounding the perversity of the situation, the slots are emblazoned with the word “Freedom” across the top. The slots don’t pay out in money…they pay out in tickets which are then cashed in for prizes.
This kind of exploitative marketing explains why serious gambling-related problems have emerged as an epidemic among America’s youth. Today, at least one out of every five young people has a serious gambling-related problem, up from one out of every ten in 1988. The prevalence rate of gambling among the young is now 80%, almost double the rate (45%) it was in 1988.

This is certainly gambling by the classical definition, where a “consideration” (prize, rather than cash) is sometimes awarded for the child’s investment in a game of chance. Nothing could be a more perfect incubator for a gambling addict down the road.
