Casinos continue to bilk taxpayers

by spgadmin

Hillary Chabot of The Boston Herald writes an important follow up story about how welfare recipients are using their Electronic Benefits Transfer cards at casinos. It follows on the heels of the recent Los Angeles Times report that found California welfare recipients spent $1.8 million in taxpayer cash on casinos.

The government program of casinos and lotteries costs more than the revenue it brings in, leaving those citizens who rarely gamble to pay the tab. Chabot’s welfare story further substantiates the findings of the 2010 New Hampshire Gambling Commission report showing one casino would raise $219 million in state revenue but the total social cost would be $287.7 million: a net drain of $68.7 million. Who do you think pays that tab?
