Blame it on the casinos, not the brothels

by Les

An Associated Press story on the severe economic crisis in Nevada reports there were 167,564 empty houses in the state last year, according to newly released U.S. Census data, more than double the number in 2000. The number of vacant homes represents about one out of every seven houses across Nevada. The state also had the highest foreclosure rate in the country in January, and delinquent mortgages are on the rise. The jobless rate is 14.2 percent, and the state’s estimated budget gap starts at $1.5 billion.

The key factor behind the crisis? According to U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, it was not because Nevada’s economy is based on the most predatory something-for-nothing scheme ever invented but because of the brothels:

“Senator Reid called out the oldest profession in a speech to state legislators, telling them the state with the nation’s highest unemployment rate was shooting itself in the economic foot by permitting legal prostitution.”

Las Vegas became the sex trafficking capital of North America only after the predatory gambling interests took over the state – not the other way around.

  1. I can't believe he actually said that

Casinos make their money from people losing money. How could Senator Reid not include them when pinpointing Nevada’s problems?

  2. Greg from Australia

    Slots

You only need to look at certain parts of Australia where slots are doing their bit overall to exacerbate financial problems and reduce jobs. Please read my comments under the February 4 enttry of the blog slots and video poker machines. Typical of gambling lobbyists to deceive the public.
