Arizona House votes to allow Glendale to annex potential casino land away from Native American tribe

by spgadmin

In what could be a signal of things to come for tribal casino interests in other states, the Arizona House of Representatives passed a bill Tuesday to allow the City of Glendale to annex 54 acres owned by the Tohono O’odham Nation. It now heads on for a vote in the State Senate.

The southern Arizona tribe in July received federal approval to place the land into the reservation system, clearing one of the hurdles to a planned a casino and resort. However, the decision wasn’t settled as Glendale, the Gila River Indian Community and others filed legal challenges.

Backed by powerful predatory gambling interests, tribes across America have been forcing casinos into communities with little citizen involvement. The decision to allow Glendale to annex the potential casino site to prevent it from being built is a major step forward and should embolden other cities and towns in the country to also challenge the most predatory business in America.
