Another major U.S. media outlet exposes the failed government policy of predatory gambling

by Les

Following on the heels of the 60 Minutes investigation into slot machines that aired in January, The Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Science Writer John Mangels publishes his investigative series into predatory gambling this week appropriately titled “Game of Trance.” The quality and extensiveness of the research and writing appears to surpass anything that has been done to date anywhere in the United States.

It is another example of high-quality reporters like Mangels revealing why the government policy of predatory gambling is a major failure. We thank him and The Plain Dealer for investing the time and resources to make this very important series happen.

Thanks for drawing attention to this series and our situation in Ohio. What I will never understand is why didn’t any of the state’s media do a series like this leading up to the vote? The casinos spent tens of millions of dollars in a campaign to change our constitution and virtually no one in the media did anything to truly confront them. I hope Governor Kasich reads the series cover to cover.

  2. Because there is a significant learning curve that goes along with this issue

Most people don’t gamble on a regular basis and they have little knowledge about how the business actually works. The casinos will spend whatever it takes to push a fake narrative to deceive the media and the public. This issue will be one of the biggest issues of the new decade.
